Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a medical neuromodulation procedure with clear regulatory guidelines governing clinical delivery. Depending on the country and regional medical board, authorized personnel typically fall into two core operational roles: TMS Prescribers and TMS Technicians/Operators.

Who is Authorized to Prescribe TMS?

In most jurisdictions, repetitive TMS (rTMS) is formally prescribed by medical specialists, primarily psychiatrists and neurologists (as well as other licensed physicians trained in neuromodulation).

In several countries, authorized TMS prescribers may encompass a broader scope of healthcare professionals licensed to treat psychological and neuropsychiatric disorders, including:

  • Medical specialists (Psychiatrists, Neurologists, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation specialists)
  • Licensed Medical Doctors (Physicians)
  • Licensed Psychotherapists & Clinical Psychologists
  • Clinical Neuropsychologists

The Core Distinction: Prescribers vs. Technicians

Many healthcare systems and clinical guidelines distinguish between the professional who determines the treatment plan and the personnel who administer daily sessions:

  • TMS Prescribers: Conduct clinical assessments, evaluate safety contraindications, determine motor thresholds, select stimulation protocols, and oversee treatment outcomes.
  • TMS Technicians & Operators: Deliver day-to-day stimulation sessions under the direct or indirect supervision of a qualified TMS prescriber. Common backgrounds include nurse practitioners, registered nurses, medical lab assistants, and physician assistants.

Supervision, Training & Competency Standards

Regardless of local jurisdictional regulations, all personnel involved in delivering TMS should complete accredited clinical training covering motor threshold determination, coil positioning accuracy, adverse-event management (including seizure protocols), and regulatory compliance.

The Academy of Brain Stimulation provides internationally recognized, EACCME®-accredited certification pathways designed to qualify both prescribing physicians and supervising technicians for clinical excellence.
